a collaboration with Gareth Howat of Hat-trick design / released on 30 August 2018

Hat-trick design asked me – back in 2016 – to collaborate on a set of stamps to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Old Vic theatre // The Old Vic and Royal Mail were keen to put the actors ‘centre stage’ in the designs / simple typographic background compositions would be a very elegant solution & ‘show-off’ the actors limelight // initially these backgrounds were uncomplicated wood letter compositions in black and white but the digitally added colour ‘light projections’ reinforce the theatrical idea // simple combination of families of English types / mostly Grotesques with some Slab serif allow the set of stamps to hold together & give a authentic historical reference to the work // detailed typographic touches / the cracked A in the Hedda Gabler acts as a reflection of the characters’ mental state / the KING creating a ‘crown’ in King Lear / the hidden arrow in the counter space of the V of Henry V and the subtle fine counter in the M of Hamlet reinforce the shape as his dagger // the textured wood surfaces hint at theatrical production design & genuinely support the simple idea of ‘treading the boards’
