Prints from The New Typography Workshop

Due to the global pandemic Alan Kitching & I have not been able to run our Typography & Letterpress School; ‘The New Typography Workshop’ in Kennington in London since March 2020.
We have been busy though & have collated all of the printed outcomes of our classes from the last three years & published in our ‘Print Shop’. The work can be seen & bought on our ‘New Typography Workshop site’. All of the proceeds from sales goes to maintaining the & school & the collection of unique wood letter & metal types. We hope to be up & running again in the Spring 2021 & are offering a Gift Voucher & prospective classes twice a month until the Autumn.
Below is an introduction to what we do & a selection of work from The New Typography Workshop ‘Print Shop’.

The resurgence of Letterpress over the last few decades has triggered a passionate respect for the craft of Typography & has reinforced its position in the visual arts. Letterpress has evolved as a natural ally to the graphic arts & identified itself as an exciting process to express ideas & an extraordinarily thorough process to examine language & typography. As an antidote to the immediate & often dispensable nature of modern technology, the slow articulation of the technical side of Letterpress allows the designer to immerse themselves in the focus of the craft & revel in the simple joys of making.
There are very few letterpress facilities remaining in the British Isles & even fewer experts to instruct. Conceived & directed by leading typographic practitioner Kelvyn Smith & letterpress maestro Alan Kitching: The New Typography Workshop is a new – hands-on – school of design & typography with letterpress at its core. It offers art directors, artists, designers, printmakers & students the opportunity to study typography & work closely with wood letter & metal type, letterpress materials & printing equipment. The school offers a series of one & two-day classes each month as well as two intense five-day Summer Schools. Business & corporate workshops are also offered to suit the requirements of the parties concerned.

Broadside 12 / The Kennington Workshops Map

We began our ‘New Typography Workshop’ map of Walworth & Kennington in September 2018 as a piece to use for promotion & to establish the proximity of the two workshop spaces // Conceived as an A1 print that would be folded to A4 – Phil Gambrill came to help us define the composition and Mary Asiedu / Kathryn Forster & Rosey Trickett designed & set the ornamented ‘green spaces’ for a two-day metal type workshop in late October 2018 // The A1 Broadside was designed set & printed across nine days in September & October 2018 in two limited edition of thirty on 145gsm Zerkall ‘Rough’ & a 125gsm coated paper & both printed in seven colours / Silver / Black / Fluorescent Orange – with a special mixed Pink / 032 Red / Process Blue & a Darkened Green. Emma Lewis documented the process on two occasions with some lovely photographs.

Broadside 14 / Some Rules & Hints for Students & Teachers . . . or Anybody else

James Isaacs & Christopher Ribet were our first Summer School students / Both accomplished designers in their own right they were joined by consultant Jim Sutherland for the duration / We set-about designing what was to become ‘Broadside 14 / as a response to Jim & Kelvyn discussing manifestos & seeing the original by John Cage / After investigation it was discovered that Cage was influenced directly by the artist & educator Sister Corita Kent who had conceived the ‘manifesto’ as a college project in LA in 1967–68. The A1 Broadside was designed set & printed across five days in a very limited edition of 30 on a 145gsm Heritage paper & printed in three colours / a very Dark Grey (a Silver & Black mix) / Silver (PMS 877) & a fluorescent Orange & (both straight from the tin).

March 2019 / Students / Matt Alchin / Dicky Milson & Valentina Moccia produced an extraordinary collection of type specimens to create ‘Broadside 15. Initially on Two-Day workshop & then returning on a few days to complete the edition. The A1 Broadside was eventually designed, set & printed across five days in a very limited edition of 25 on a 145gsm coated stock & printed in three colours / Dark Grey (Silver & Black) / Fluorescent Orange & Silver ‘straight from the tin’ (PMS 877). As usual Freddy Williams worked his socks off as the workshop assistant & the fabulous Rupert Bassett kindly gave up his precious time as the ‘workshop consultant’ for the entire five days to direct the whole project & keep the random decisions from distilling the outcome!
